There are those who are put off by anime - by its "cute" rendition of characters and even by the fact that it is animated. We believe that the cult of kawaii (cuteness) in Japan - even when pursued in works less exalted than Nausicaa is an attempt - by no means wholly unconscious - to invoke the spirit of childlike goodness. The cynical West could learn a lot from kawaii.
